Call for Papers
“Thoughts, Institutions, and Orders Across the Indian Ocean”
The 3rd International Conference on Civilizational Exchange and Mutual Learning in the Indian Ocean Region
Since prehistoric times, winds and currents have facilitated the movement of goods and people across the seas, forming transportation networks that connect East and West. These networks, rich with diverse symbolic meanings, have woven intricate webs of ideas linking oceans, ports, and hinterlands. From local communities to transnational political and economic systems, people, goods, and ideas have intertwined like strands twisted into ship cables, giving rise to various institutions and orders. Within the tension between ideals and reality, they continuously reshape the universe of meaning in the Indian Ocean region.
To implement the Four Global Initiatives, advance the building of a community with a shared future for mankind through academic innovation and people-to-people exchanges, and celebrate the 80th Anniversary of Oriental Studies at Peking University, following the successful 2024 conference Multilingual Sources and History Writings in the Indian Ocean Region and the 2025 conference Literatures and Arts Across the Indian Ocean, the Center for Eastern Literature Studies, School of Foreign Languages, and Institute of Oriental Studies at Peking University will jointly organize the 3rd International Conference on Civilizational Exchange and Mutual Learning in the Indian Ocean Region.
The conference will be held October 8–12, 2026 at Peking University (the exact dates are subject to the official invitation and program), under the theme “Thoughts, Institutions, and Orders Across the Indian Ocean.” We sincerely invite scholars worldwide to gather at Peking University to explore topics including:
1. Trans-Indian Ocean dissemination and localization of religious beliefs
2. Cross-cultural transmission of political thought in the Indian Ocean region
3. Comparative studies on political institutions in Indian Ocean countries
4. Multicultural communities in Indian Ocean port cities
5. Gender ideologies and social order in the Indian Ocean region
6. Colonial order and knowledge systems in the Indian Ocean region
7. Post-colonial visions of order in the Indian Ocean region
The working languages of the conference are Chinese and English. Presentations will be held primarily in person, and overseas scholars may present online. The organizing committee will send official invitation letters to registered participants and assist overseas scholars with Chinese visa applications.
A conference fee of RMB 800 per person will be charged; students are eligible for a 50% discount with valid certification. Meals and conference materials during the event will be covered by the organizer. Participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodation arrangements.
